In the Korean culture, it is bad to write in red...but in this case, it brings good luck because the lanyard from TRICO was red. TRICO was so awesome this year. The SRPs (Student Resource Person) were so great to all the frosh. Super shout out to: Emily, Rashidah, Dorcas, Lisette, Laura, Soenda, Erik, Cory, Tracy, Elisa, MJ, Robyn, Samir, and William!!! You guys are the greatest! Being in TRICO taught me so much. All my life, I thought I was a pretty liberal person. But after my experience at TRICO, I discovered that I really wasn't. Indeed I had my own stereotypes about other people, discriminations against certain sexualities, and biases about other social statuses. TRICO opened my eyes. The program itself was fantastic, but the people (you've gotta love the people!) taught me so much. The stories they told about themselves, exposing the most fragile part of their lives, broke my heart and touched me in so many ways. I wish everyone in the world could hear these stories- then they wouldn't be so ignorant. The FishBowls, Journal Groups, and Icebreakers were fun and inspiring (not to mention tiring- remember the one where we had to get up and down?! My calves- I'm still getting Charlie Horses!!!!). I have never learned so much about so many people is such little time. My closest friends now are from TRICO because I trust them. TRICO was a huge process in which to trust people who you can relate to. I have never met such BEAUTIFUL people! ( You TRICO peeps are so...I love you guys!!!) TRICO is a great experience that every college student of color should live through. It's intense. It's tight. It's emotionally difficult. It's fun. It's exciting (like that trust walk). I've learned so much from the program, the administrators, the SRPs, and the students, but the most important thing to always keep in mind is that every year TRICO is different and every year, the students create the TRICO. Many of us will move on to meet new friends and perhaps stray from TRICO, but we should never forget what we learned at TRICO and pass it along to others. Gradually, "kumbaya" can be achieved- if we tried. |
